Q: during winter -will this be damaged in any way I am talking about model k5.68. Is this a good choice for cedar siding and concrete and pavers?
by Bill from New Jersey on June 02, 2011

A: During the winter you would want to take this inside. The problem you can have is the pumps and other pieces on the machine freeze up and the washer would not work.

This would work fine on your pavers and the siding.

Thanks,

Q: What kind of detergent or other liquids such as ArmorAll be used in the Karcher model K5.68 pressure washer?
by DARYL HAMMOND from Ohio on April 30, 2011

A: I would only recommend detergents that are labeled as being "pressure washer safe". There are many different types and brands available. Any other type of chemical that is used in this machine could absolutely dry out the seals and o rings and cause the pump to leak or stop producing pressure.

Unfortunately we do not carry any type of ArmorAll chemical that is considered "pressure washer safe". I am posting a link below to all of the detergents we carry:

Q: Do you have any self priming pressure washers for sale (gas or electric) ? I have wood deck on my 1/2 acre pond to clean & would like to be able to use the pond water. Thankyou.
by John from Ohio on March 25, 2011

A: Yes, all Karcher branded pressure washers both the gas and electric versions have self priming pumps that can pull water from a standing source such as a tank or pond. We also sell Kranzle and DirtKiller brand pressure washers which too have self priming pumps. Kranzle and DirtKiller only offer professional grade pressure washers while Karcher offers residential and prosumer grade models.

I would definitely recommend that you use a filter on the end of the hose that is placed in the pond to prevent debris from entering the pump. Karcher makes a hose with filter for this purpose that we sell as an accessory.
by Mike, Product Expert
Q: What happens when you use hot water in a Karcher electric power washer? I never knew they were (Electric-Cold Water) listed.
by Bob Mills from Michigan on March 25, 2011

A: Karcher's cold water pressure washers can accept water up to 104F degrees. This is common with all cold water pressure washers. Using water hotter than 104F degrees in a cold water pressure washer will definitely damage and wear away the seals in the pump, causing the pump to fail. This is the fastest way to damage a pump that is rated for "cold water".
by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Just bought the Karcher 3.74 from you guys. What is the "Pump Guard" which is recommended for storing and protecting the pump? And how do I use such?
by Preben Jensen from California on March 24, 2011

A: The Karcher pump guard is a chemical that is designed to extend the life of the pump and the seals within. Pump guard or pump saver as it is also called, will lubricate the seals in the pump and also prevent any water that is left inside the pump from freezing during the colder months.

To use this product, you simply attach it to your garden hose water inlet fitting and turn the machine on for a few seconds. Once the chemical exits the outlet high pressure fitting, the pump is protected.

You should defintely run this chemical through the pump every time you are going to store your pressure washer away for extended periods of time such as over 30 days. You should also run this chemical through the pump periodically throughout the year to keep the seals moist.

Karcher is well known for the quality and reliability of their products which is why this model made it into our "Better" category.

Karcher uses a good quality induction motor which last longer than other electric motors and a axial pump which is the same pump used on Karcher gas machines.

This model comes with many great features, including a built-in hose reel, which keeps the hose tidy. You will also receive two spray wands and two ways to apply detergent.

Great Product
For an around the house power washer it kicks butt. I have only had it for a year, and used it a few times, but the performance is great.

I am a little skeptical about the longevity of some of the hose connections, but time will tell. I think I made a wise purchase.
Pros: Easy To Store, Easy To Use, Price, I'd Buy It Again

Gary,
Adding a garden hose quick connect set will help reduce wear & tear on the garden hose connection. You can usually find them at any hardware store for around $5 for plastic, under $10 for brass.

3rd Such Power Washer
All 3 malfunctioned less than 3 months after purchase. Call me a sucker! The last, has been under warranty repair since Sept 7 2013. Several parts were back ordered and one is still on back order (2 months to date).

The unit had some good qualities but overall I would recommend that you shop elsewhere for a unit for personal use.
Pros: Easy To Use, Quiet, Easy To Store
Cons: Unreliable, Durability, Warranty Parts On Back Order For 2 Mo

Two Machines, Same Problem, No More Warranty
First machine broke, no pressure and leaks from base unit, after a couple of months, quick replacement but new machine has same leak problem now. No repair is possible and no replacement from Karcher!

Steve,
The terms of Karcher's Rapid Exchange Factory Warranty say "...any remaining time on your original warranty will be applied to your replacement pressure washer. For example, if you bought a pressure washer on January 1 with a one-year warranty and exchanged it with the Rapid Exchange Program on July 15, the replacement pressure washer would be covered until December 31, the expiration date of your original warranty."

Same Bad Feature
My last Karcher leaked from where the hose hooks up to the machine. This one does too. Can't do a job without water leaking all over. Same cheap plastic parts will break too.
Pros: Easy To Store, Light Weight
Cons: Durability, Low Quality, Expensive

Sally,
There are a couple things you can do to stop, or at least greatly reduce, the leaking where your garden hose attaches to the pressure washer.

First, put a fresh garden hose gasket (a round rubber or plastic ring about the size of a quarter) in the end of your garden hose. You can get several for under a dollar at hardware & grocery stores.

Second, put a couple wraps of teflon pipe tape (again, under a dollar at hardware & grocery stores) around the threads of the connector where your garden hose attaches.

Better yet- get a plastic garden hose quick connect set (under $5 at the hardware store). Use the fresh garden hose gasket and the pipe tape, and you should have a tighter, and more convenient, fit.

Crappy Plastic Pump Head And Pressure Control Head
This thing will beak down quicker than chinese junk - oh wait, it is chinese made junk with a German label on it - just look at the fine print on the labels. In all honesty and cynical comments aside, tho is the biggest crap Karcher ever made. The head leaks after using it maybe 10 times. It's all plastic and will let you down fast. Unfortunately, it's 3 times more expensive than some cheap chinese competition without tha fancy Karcher name. What's it worth of the motor is great but the... more

Frank,
This unit comes with a 1 year Factory Warranty from the folks at Karcher- just give them a call, toll free, at (800) 537-4129 to start the repair/replacement process.

Please be sure to have the serial number of your pressure washer handy when you call them- they'll need it to set up your claim. They will also need a copy of your invoice. I checked our files and I'm sorry, I didn't see a listing for you; our customers can print one out from our website at any time.

Unlike cheap no-name units, Karcher owns their factories all over the world and maintains strict quality control of their product. As the largest producer of pressure washers on the planet they will honor their warranty anywhere in the world their products are sold.

Do Not Buy This Machine
I bought the Karcher Pressure washer because I got sucked in to the German engineering story… Turns out the engineering is c**p!

My requirements for a pressure washer are pretty light. Clean the pool deck, clean the deck furniture, and occasionally wash the car. I bought the machine a couple of years ago… the first one died within 6 months, with 4 or 5 uses. Karcher replaced that machine. It died within 8 months.

Karcher replaced that machine outside of their warranty period. That... more

Doug,
I understand your disappointment. Our experience with thousands of these units shows that their failure rate is still lower than the industry norm- and it's very unusual that all 3 units "died" prematurely.

Heat is the enemy of consumer electric washers- on hot days it's a good idea to let the unit cool off between tasks. Since you live in Miami you will need to be careful not to leave the unit running while you move cars or furniture- a small electric unit will overheat and fail prematurely, no matter which brand you buy. A unit with a water-cooled motor is a good choice for hot climates.

I'm impressed that Karcher replaced the second unit outside of the warranty period- they aren't obligated to do that. Usually the replacement unit is only covered for the rest of the original warranty.

Pump Leaking Water After 2 Years
Just used it for 2 seasons (2 summers), and the pumping is leaking water, no high pressured water any more.
Pros: Easy To Store
Cons: Durability, Low Quality, Unreliable
Mike, the Pressure Washer Expert
Product Expert
Manjun,
I'm sorry to hear your pressure washer is leaking. Since water freezing and expanding over the winter can damage the pump seals and cause leaks, the folks at Karcher recommend using their Pump Guard as well as storing the pressure washer where it won't freeze.

While it won't fix your current pressure washer, Pump Saver should help you get better service from your next unit.

My Third Karcher - Convenient But Top Heavy.
The hose reel is a great feature. The only drawback is it makes it top heavy. First time it falls over the crank handle will break. The second time the handle cradle will break....just like my last Karcher.
I may replace the broken piece as there aren't a lot of options for on-board storage of the wand.

I'd buy another one, and be careful NOT to pull the hose.

The quick disconnects are very handy, especially the one for the handle.

My next one will be gas.
Pros: Easy To Store, Easy To Use, Price, I'd Buy It Again
Cons: Durability, Plastic Parts Break Easily When It Falls Over

Good For What It's For
I own the smaller model and it is okay. It works well but fooling with the hose and electric cord is aggravating. If you only use a washer occasionally it is okay, and it's easy and light to store.
Pros: Reliable, High Quality, Easy To Store, Too Many Cords And Hoses It Is Cumbersome
Cons: Cumbersome To Use A Good Machine But The Gas Is Easier

Very Disappointed
I am very disappointed- it is cheap plastic. The wheel fell off, the wand holder & cord holder broke, and it falls over when pulling hose out from the reel. The pressure Hose near the wand is ready to split.

I have owned Karcher products in the past and they were very well made & made to last. I thought the unit was made in Germany- not so, it's made in China. I will not waste my money on another one.

I have not used the unit a lot, I expected it to last longer. It's only a year... more
