| How to Pick a Power Washer for a Restaurant Kitchen |
| By Jon Hoch, Founder (Bolingbrook, IL) |
Back in high school, I was a cook at the local Chili's restaraunt. Just before close, my job was to clean the kitchen floor.
What an unpleasant chore!
We used a 50-foot garden hose with a whopping 40 PSI of water pressure. It lacked the strength to actually clean anything. It just flooded the floor before you scrubbed it with a brush.
The garden hose deposited so much water, it took a half hour to squeegee the dirty water into the drain.
The proper pressure washer can significantly reduce your cleaning time and overtime.
Just look for these important features:
1. Get an Electric Model
Gas-powered pressure washers produce carbon monoxide gas, which can be deadly indoors. Yes, electric power washers are weaker, but they produce plenty of pressure to tackle this assignment.
2. Get a Wall-Mounted Model
Space in a restaurant is always limited. Simply mount it on the wall above your slop sink and connect it to your water supply.
3. Get a Warm Water Model
Warm tap water will destroy an ordinary electric pressure washer. Purchase a model with a professional-grade pump, which can withstand temperatures up to 180 degrees. The heat will melt away the solidified grease behind the deep fryer.
4. Get an Extension Hose
You'll need a 50-foot high pressure hose to reach every inch of the kitchen. With an extension hose, you can also power wash the back dock and garbage corral.
5. Get Lots of Degreaser
Naturally, warm soapy water will always clean better than cold water alone. If you plan to use the pressure washer to dispense the soap, make sure that it's pressure washer safe. Otherwise, unapproved soaps can damage the seals in the pressure washer. |
