Q: I recently purchased a Generac 6596 and am extremely happy with the performance of this unit except I would like to add more length (25') to the pressure hose. It gets quite confusing when looking at the choices offered. Can you please offer your suggestion for a 25' extension hose for this unit?
by Mike Baird from Michigan on October 30, 2015

A: Thanks for your inquiry. I would recommend the MTM hose model 30.0130. This is a 25FT hose, just like the one you have. You would then need adapter model D10040 to attach the 2 hoses together. I have attached links for you to view those items.

Q: Had a 5 yr old Homelite(3100 psi) unit that went bad. The local small engine repair guy said gas power washers kept in garages and only used 1-2 time a year build up gunk in the carbs. If I buy the 6596. is there a storage method to avoid this?
by Tom Leibman from Texas on May 26, 2015

A: Yes, anytime you store a small engine it is recommended to put a fuel stabilizer in the tank to avoid build up and gumming in the carburetor. I have attached a link for you to view the product I am referring to.

Q: Mike, I am looking at the Generac One-Wash 3100 PSI and the Generac 2800 PSI. Is the main difference aside from the 2800 to the 3100 PSI that the One wash you can adjust the pressure or can you do that on the 2800?
by Chris from Connecticut on May 18, 2015

A: The 6598 and the 6602 are both 3100 PSI units with the 6602 having an adjuster on the pump for those newer to pressure washing.

The 6598 and the 6602 are both larger machines than the 6596.

Q: Hi Mike, I am interested in a pressure washer. I'll use it to clean my deck and ranch house probably once a year and occasionally clean my garden tractor with it. I like the 2800 psi generac that is on sale but I'm concerned about the cheaper units and their pumps. I believe this one has aluminum pistons which seem to me would be prone to corrosion. Should I buy something like this or save my money and go for something more than double the price? I do take good care of my stuff so, it will get rinsed out, etc...
by Joe White from Massachusetts on May 16, 2015

A: The Generac units are some of the best consumer grade units in the industry today. They use an AR brand axial cam pump with an aluminum head, but do tend to hold up for consumer use. I would not hesitate to recommend the Generac Unit.
by Mike, Product Expert

Q: What is the minimum water pressure required for a Generac 6596
by Phil from Texas on May 14, 2015

A: Per the owners manual page 8 found under our specs tab.

Do Not siphon standing water for the water supply. Use Only cold water. Water supply must be adequate to handle greater than 3.8 gallons per minute and no less than 30 PSI.
by Mike, Product Expert

Q: You mentioned using a Briggs turbo spray tip on the Generac model 6596 in order to have a "5 in 1" tip. which one would work for the 2800PSI The chart has 2500PSI and 3000PSI?
by Fred from West Virginia on November 07, 2014

A: You could use the 5 in 1 tip with your unit. The Briggs model 6197 would match up perfectly with the Generac 6598 model. However, the 5 in 1 tip has nothing to do with a turbo nozzle. The 5 in 1 tip connects to the end of the wand and replaces the colored spray tips. It allows you to adjust the spray fan without switching out the tip. A turbo nozzle would connect in the same place. It takes the pencil sharp high pressure spray, and rotates it at approximately 3600 RPM. This gives you a 5-7" high pressure cleaning swath, allowing you to complete jobs in 50% of the time than using the red tip.

Q: Mike, we have two old washers, but want to get one new one. Trying to decide between two at Lowes. Generac 2800psi or Troy built 2800psi Briggs & Stratton. Complaints In the reviews, the Troy had a small fuel tank and the hose connections were tight quarters. The Generac someone complained it didn't have a plate with the model or serial # so he couldn't find a parts listing on line. He may be right. The model # at Lowes is 6549 but it doesn't come up on Generacs web. I would like to get the Generac but I want to able to get parts too. Will that be a problem ?
Dave BEST OF THREE PARK- bestofthree.com

by DAVID E SPEELMAN from Ohio on July 27, 2014

A: I do not sell or specialize in parts here. Also, Lowes gets different products then dealers like my self. You should reach out to Generac with your concerns about Lowes products. If you are looking to purchase a model from us, we offer free shipping and no sales tax here at Pressurewashersdirect.com

Q: In what ways is the Briggs and stratton 2800psi washer better than the Generac 6596. I would like a washer that I could put extension rods on to wash my house. Are they both able to install rods on the handle? I just need a washer around my house to do little jobs but I would like it to last more than a couple years. Are both pumps the same quality? Thanks
by Craig Lapp from Pennsylvania on June 05, 2014

A: Here is the listing for 2800 PSI Pressure Washers. You can look at up to 4 pressure washers side by side by clicking the Compare boxes on the left side of the screen. That way you can easily decide which features appeal to you most.

Both units use M22 connectors, so a Telescoping Wand or Extension Wand will work.

The folks at Generac have put some of their units on sale for the next 9 days, so you can get more bang for your buck.

Since you're looking to keep the unit for a long time, you could also use the Service Locator to find out which brand has the easiest access to Factory Service in your area- in the long run that convenience could outweigh the small price difference.
by Mike, Product Expert

Q: What are the pump pistons made of?
by B Wheeler from Ohio on June 04, 2014

A: This unit comes with an axial cam pump. The pistons are made of metal (usually an aluminum alloy) for strength without excess weight.

You usually won't find ceramic or ceramic-coated pistons until you get into units with triplex plunger pumps.

I hope this helps- we appreciate your interest in Pressure Washers Direct!

Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!
The instructions of its use? "Do not use any longer than a 50 foot hose from faucet." What? Just how useful is that? What a dumb limitation. Better not use it outside your garage!

Douglas,
Most consumer-grade pressure washers depend on the back-pressure of city water to keep a steady supply of water flowing to the pump; this ensures peak performance. Generac recommends "Water supply must be adequate to handle greater than 3.8 gallons per minute and no less than 30 psi."

Their testing has shown that this unit's 2800 PSI, 2.5 gallons per minute performance is not usually met with supply hoses longer than 50 feet. If you have to work farther than 50 feet away from a spigot you may want to consider adding a 1/4" Extension Hose with M22 connectors (please be sure to make sure the genders of your connectors will match up properly). You can double the length of your high pressure hose without an appreciable drop in pressure out the end of your spray gun, so that would add another 25 feet to your cleaning range.

Another way to extend your reach is with Generac's 2nd Story Nozzle Kit. This will allow you to reach further with both soap and plain water spray.

Douglas,
As PED has alluded, longer hoses limit the water pressure output provided to the unit. To ensure that you are able to use your power washer efficiently for your desired applications, we would recommend ensuring that your unit is always provided the 3.8 gallons per minute and 30 psi (minimum) that it requires for optimal use. If you have any additional comments, questions, or concerns, please contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722).

Hoping For The Best
Received my Generac model 6596 30 min ago. I haven't even started it yet but I had to stop and write this review.

1) It came damaged. Like others have mentioned, I don't have a broken gas cap, I have a smashed gas tank. Seems it was dropped and the top of the gas tank is crushed about 3/8 of an inch. Good news, it doesn't look like it will affect the unit. The gas cap seals well and all seams look solid.

I immediately called Generac and they do not replace gas tanks. I was told to call a... more

Manufacturer Response
Brand Rep
David,
Thank you for providing us with your detailed review of the 2800 PSI residential grade pressure washer. We are sorry to learn of the damage incurred to your unit during its shipment. As you have already noted, these issues can be remedied by an independent authorized service provider, and by processing a freight claim through the assigned shipping company. Please note that the independent authorized service provider closest to you can be located online by using your local postal code for searching purposes via the following link: http://www.generac.com/dealer-locator?cid=frm-105-ab.
Also, as you have alluded, the unit features an oil capacity of 20 ounces (0.6 liters). The H on the dipstick is the high (full) mark. When adding oil, it should be added to the H marking. Please note that these units are tested at the factory, and there may be oil left in the crankcase. Always utilize the dipstick when adding oil to ensure that the unit is not overfilled.
During operation, when the oil level reaches the L mark, that means the oil level is low, and oil should be added. The oil capacity information, as well as other specifications for this unit, are located on the product's spec sheet. To locate a copy of this documentation online, search the model or serial number for the unit here: http://www.generac.com/service-support/product-support-lookup?cid=frm-105-ac.
Lastly, if you have any other product-related comments, questions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722). We do apologize for any issues this unfortunate situation may have caused.

Excellent Pressure
Fairly easy to use.

The connection to the water supply is in a tricky place on the machine, but not a big problem. Easy interchangeability of the nozzles is a big plus. Excellent pressure and easy-to-use wand. The pressure hose frequently gets in the way of the wheels when moving the machine.

Double 5 Star Rating !
The first 5 star rating goes to the Generac # 6596. Great unit. From unpacking to set - up, and on to using it, everything went flawlessly.

Product arrived without a scratch, very well packaged. Set - up went without a problem, everything was included and went together perfectly. Start up was the best, followed all the instructions. Added oil & gas and on the second pull it was going.

I have used it for approx. 15 hrs an have no problems what so ever, and it has always started on... more

I Was Excited, Now Not So Much!
It was easy to put together and difficult to start the first time. The second time I used it the pressure hose had a hole in it. Things got crazy after that. I have only had it for one month and I had to replace the hose.

Also, even when connections seem tight, water from the garden hose shoots out every where. The location of the heat exhaust (?) is crazy and you have to be very very careful not to let the pressure hose come in contact with it or I am certain it would melt it quickly.

Mike, the Pressure Washer Expert
Product Expert
Sally,
In your Owner's Manual Engine Starting Checklist it says "confirm the system is purged of air". This means to hook up the water supply, then squeeze the spray gun trigger and let water run through the unit BEFORE starting the engine to drive out any air in the pump.

Since the pump and the engine are connected, air trapped in the pump will make the engine very hard to start. Clearing the air out will make the engine much easier to start. Your manual also says "After each starting attempt, where engine fails to run, always point gun in safe direction, and squeeze spray gun trigger to release high pressure."

There are also several cautions in the Owner's Manual about avoiding contact with the hot muffler. Making sure the hose doesn't kink or flip over the muffler during use does take some extra effort. It helps to stop spraying, move the hose, then continue spraying instead of trying to drag the hose around without stopping your cleaning.

You may find that a couple wraps of Teflon plumbers tape (less than a dollar at any grocery or hardware store) around the garden hose connection will help prevent leaks. Adding a garden hose quick connect (plastic ones are about 5 dollars) will save your knuckles and cut down on leaking as well.

12 Hours In...
The box arrived pretty beat up.

Was sorta concerned...but nothing looked messed up. Pieces went together easy enough.

Started on the second pull.

Day 1...pretty much ran it for 12 hours straight.

So far problem free. 12 hours isn't much of a review...but it's all I got. Worked like it was supposed to.

Great Washer
You won't be disappointed with the purchase of this power washer. Add a turbo tip (nozzle) and storage oil when you purchase the washer and you have in my opinion the perfect setup for your toughest needs around the house. Added the oil, filled with gas and started on the first pull. Very happy with the job it does.
